Description:
"mC Office Autcmation Technology Support" The Nuclear Regulatory Ccnmission (mC) is charged with regulating the ccnmercial use of nuclear materials to assure the health and safety of the public. Increasing regulatory duties coupled with decreasing resources require MC to continually irrprove and expand the use of autcmated infonmtion systems. The Agency.is striving to distribute the pcur of ccrrputers to all possible end users. The Agency will provide a personal cwter '(PC) to each amloyee vho can ef fectively use one in performing assig v 'kties. The Ks will be networked together into Local Area Neturk (l.AN) ="igurations where bene ficial . The lANs will be inter-connected into Wide Are Network (VMN) configurations as required to ensure agency-wide inforrration exchange and maximize data sharirg.
A three phased approach to full automation of all agency offices is planned.
Phase I will cover the replacerrent of all existirg IN 5520 mrdprocessirg systems with Ks on LANS. MC currently utilizes the IN 5520 Administrative System to acccnplish word processing and docunent transfer throughout all its i offices. The corponents of the present 5520 neturk include 19 central processing units, 143 printers and 750 display stations. The 5520 network supports all missions of the MC directly by providirg word processirg and docunent transfer capabilities between and arrorg alI agency organizations.
IW no longer manufactures the IN 5520 product line. The MC rrust move to a new procbet soon because, even though maintenance and support are presently provided, future service is not guaranteed, parts are beccnmirg scarce and
$gn. the equiprent centinues to experience failures which wiII increase with age.
$ IM to IM connectivity will be provided to achieve agency-wide goo ccnmunication of text functionally similar to that provided via the 5520 h? network today. With the introduction of the N and IM as basic office gg$ automation tools, the mC can also irrprove and integrate word processirg cau.c: and docurent transfer with other office autcrmtion functions like

Approxinstely 1300 NC staff presently have neither a 5520 display station nor-a stand alone PC. Extending conputing power to this group, networked as-appropriate, will carplete the agency-wide office autanation objective.
These proposed procursnent actions wiii include aii necessary ADP har&are (file servers, carmunication servers,10 workstations, printers, etc.), ACP software (LAN operating systen, PC operating system, spreadsheets, data base managanent system, word processing, electronic null, etc.), networking conponen.
(adaptor cards, connector, cables, printers,etc.), .and services to perfonn requirements analysis, neterk solution design, installation, user orientation, post-installation support, parallel operations as necessary, text conversion anc seamisss interface for docunent transfer until all 5520 sources are phased out.
