SAFETY EVALUATION OF SEALED SOURCE l
l NO.: NR-460-S-876-S DATE: January 26, 1996 PAGE 2 OF 5 SEALED SOURCE TYPE:
Sealed' Source DESCRIPTION:
The 4F6G is a singly-encapsulated sealed source.
Cesium-137 in the form of 3M Brand Radiating Microspheres are inserted into a type 304 stainless steel tube.
The tube has an outer diameter of 0.500 in. (1.270 cm) and a wall thickness of 0.035 in. (0.089 cm) and ranges from 2.000 in. (5.080 cm) to 37.00 in. (93.98 cm) in length.
The ends of the tube are plugged with oven-dried fiberfrax.
The source is then cleaned until it passes a wipe test.
The plugs are then welded, the dimensions checked, and the assembly filed (if necessary) to ensure it meets the specified dimensions.
The 4F6G sealed source is designed to hold up to 500.0 mci (18.50 GBq) of cesium-137.
However, Ohmart Corporation, the manufacturer of the device in which these sources have generally been used, has indicated that the maximum activity for their device is 100.0 millicuries (3.700 GBq).
The overall length of the source is 1.000 in. (2.540 cm) longer than the active length of the source, which ranges from 1.000 in. (2.540 cm) to 36.00 in. (91.44 cm).

SEAT En SOURCE TYPE:
Sealed Source CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:
The sealed source is intended for use in gauging devices made by the Ohmart Corporation.
PROTOTYPE TESTING:
This sealed source was approved for manufacture and distribution under a specific license issued by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) to the 3M Company in 1963.
EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:
External radiation dose rates were calculated for a 500.0 mci (18.50 GBq) Cs-137 source as follows:
Distance Maximum Radiation Level (from surface)
(in)
(R/hr)
(Sv/hr)
(cm) 5 1.97 66.0 0.66 30 11.81 1.83 0.02 100 39.37 0.165 0.002 OUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL:
The following quality control procedures were followed during production of this source:
- 1. After pressing the second plug in place (before welding it),
the source was wipe tested.
If it failed the wipe test, the source was cleaned and then retested until a negative wipe test was obtained.
REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF SEALED SOURCE NO.: NR-460-S-876-S DATE: January 26, 1996 PAGE 4 OF 5 SEATEn SOURCE TYPE:
Sealed Source OUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL: (Continued)
- 2. Both ends of the completed source were bubble-leak-tested by immersing them in water at 200*F (93.33'C).
If any bubbles were observed coming from either end, the source failed the test.
- 3. The source was wipe tested again after the bubble leak test, and then wipe tested after it was stored for 7 days.
LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:
This source may be used only by persons specifically licensed by the NRC or an Agreement State.
Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal:
to be determined by the licensing authority.
This source shall be leak tested at intervals not to exceed 6 months using techniques capable of detecting 0.005 microcurie (185.0 Bq) of removable contamination.
This registration sheet and the information contained within the references shall not be changed without the written consent of the NRC.
SAFETY ANALYSIS
SUMMARY
The Model 4F6G source is not a current product manufactured or distributed by 3M Health Physics Services.
However, 3M Health Physics Services will continue to receive 4F6G sources for disposal.
Based on our review of the Model 4F6G source, the information and test data cited below, and the original review and approval issued by AEC in 1963, we continue to conclude that this sealed source is acceptable for specific licensing purposes.

SUMMARY
- (continued)
Furthermore, we continue to conclude that the 4F6G source would be expected to maintain its containment integrity for normal conditions of use and accidental conditions which might occur during uses specified in this certificate.

MINNES0TA MINING AND MANUFACTURING (3M) INACTIVE FILES hf FROM:
SUBJECT:
INACTIVATION OF REGISTRATIONS BASED ON AUGUST 6, 1991, LETTER.
A number of the background files for the registration certificates requested (by 3M letter dated August 6, 1991) to be made inactive contain limited information on the products. A search of 3M registration, archive, and license files, and information in NUD0CS was performed to obtain additional information. Also, 3M was contacted to obtain any additional information that may have been in their files.
3M provided limited additional information concerning these products and indicated that the information provided represented all additional information in their files.
Additional information obtained from these sources has been added to the applicable registration files.
At the present time, the information contained in the background registration files represents all available information for these products.
In addition, a number of these products were originally reviewed and approved by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). The reviews performed for these products to make the certificates inactive were based on the information available, the previous reviews and approvals, and the historical use of the products (i.e., reports of failures or design problems, or the lack thereof).
In several instances, insufficient information was available to perform an adequate safety review.
In these instances, the certificates have been reissued based solely on the i
original AEC review and approval, and no additional safety review was performed.
