REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF SEALED SOURCE NO,: NR-460-S-901-S DATE: January 26, 1996 PAGE 2 OF 7 SEALED SOURCE TYPE:
Gauge Source DESCRIPTION:
The Model 5F1M is a doubly-encapsulated bremsstrahlung strip source.
Strontium-90 (Sr-90) is absorbed and permanently fixed into small ceramic particles ranging from 0.001.008 in.
(30-200 microns) in diameter using a heat treatment to create 3M Brand Radiating Microspheres.
The microspheres are loaded into a cylindrical, stainless steel tube with 0.002 in. (0.005 cm) thick walls.
This tube is closed by a silver brazed plug at both ends.
The tube is then inserted into a stainless steel outer tube with 0.002 in. (0.005 cm) thick walls; the outer tube is also plugged and silver brazed to seal it.
The active source tubes are inserted into a backer.
The backer is a 270' aluminum cylinder (the cross secti'on looks like a circle with a 90' wedge removed) with a 0.500 in. (1.270 cm) diameter, except for a 0.250 in. (0.635 cm) long section on each end where the diameter is 0.313 in. (0.795 cm), including threads.
At the root of the 90' notch is a slot running the length of the backer.
The slot measures 0.130 in. (0.330 cm) across its mouth and extends 0.075 in. (0.191 cm) into the backer.
It accommodates the source tubes, which are the same length as the slot.
The source tubes are held in place by a series of retaining pins 0.380 in. (0.965 cm) long with a diameter of 0.031 in. (0.079 cm) which fit into holes drilled into the aluminum backer so that they lie across the opening to the groove where the source tubes lay.
The pins are press fit into their slots and then a ball peen hammer is used to deform the aluminum around their holes to ensure the pins do not fall out.
The pins are never more than 5.000 in. (12.70 cm) apart.
Two type 303 stainless steel end plugs also help hold the source tubes in.
The plugs are 0.750 in. (1.905 cm) long with a diameter of 0.500 in. (1.270 cm).
On one end, they are threaded 0.270 in. (0.686 cm) deep to screw onto the end of the backer.
On the other, the plugs are drilled and threaded 0.250 in. (0.635 cm) deep.
This end of the plugs also has a 0.063 in. (0.160 cm) square groove at the side.
When assembled, this groove aligns with the groove and milled out area in the backer.
The end plugs are screwed onto the ends of the backer, and are secured with epoxy.

Gauge Source DESCRIPTION: (Continued)
The active length of the SF1M source is 0.500 in. (1.270 cm) less than the backer section length.
The active length varies depending on the device the source is intended to be used in.
The t)tal length of any given 5F1M source is 1.500 in. (3.810 cm) longer than its active length.
This SF1M (modified) source varies from the SF1M only in the following ways:
1.
Instead of the aluminum end caps threaded onto the backer, the modified SF1H uses aluminum end plugs press fitted into the backer rod and welded or staked in place.
2.
Instead of the threaded holes used for mounting, each end of the modified SF1M has a 1/8 in. (0.318 cm) wide by 3/32 in.
(0.238 cm) deep keyway on the " active" side parallel to the source axis.
DIAGRAM:
See Attachments 1 and 2.
LABELING:
3M stated that the following information is engraved on the side of the aluminum backer:
3M Company Model 5F1M (Serial No.)
XXX mc Sr-90 FONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:
The sealed source is for use in gauging devices and is installed in gauging devices by the device manufacturer.

PROTOTYPE TESTING:
A 12.00 in. (30.48 cm) active length prototype of the 3M Model 3A1S source, whose construction is identical to the SF1M, was loaded with 25.00 millicuries (0.925 GBq) of Sr-90 and subjected to the following tests:
- 1. The source was heated to 932*F (500*C) and held at that temperature for 30 minutes.
- 2. The source was quenched from 932*F (500*C) to the temperature of cold water at 68'F (20*C).
- 3. The source was subjected to an impact of 2 ft-lb (8.9 N) 20 times at each of two points 180' apart, 3.000 in. (7.620 cm) from the end of the source.
The source was both leak and wipe tested after each of the tests.
The leak test consisted of immersion in water at 200*F (93.33*C)
)
for at least 10 seconds and observing any bubbles generated.
The allowable wipe test limit was 0.0001 Ci (3.700 Bq) of removable i
contamination.
All leak tests and all wipe tests were negative.
l EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:
As referenced in the 1984 Edition of the Radiological Health Handbook, Rules of Thumb, when beta particles from a 1.000 Ci (37.00 GBq) source of SrY-90 are absorbed, the bremsstrahlung hazard is approximately equal to that presented by gammas from (0.0004 oz.) 12 mg of radium.
Based upon this, external radiation levels were calculated for a (0.0004 oz.) 12 mg radium source.

SAFETY ANALYSIS
SUMMARY
i l
The Models 5F1M and 5F1M (modified) sources are not current I
. products manufactured or distributed by 3M Health. Physics Services.
However, 3M Health Physics Services will continue to receive Model 5F1M and 5F1M (modified) sources for disposal.
Based on our review of the Models SF1M and SF1M (modified) 1 sources, and:the information and test data cited below, we
)
continue to conclude that these sources are acceptable for specific licensing purposes.
Furthermore, we continue to conclude that the SF1M and 5F1M (modified) sources would be expected to maintain their containment integrity for normal conditions of use and accidental conditions which might occur during uses specified in this certificate.

MINNES0TA MINING AND MANUFACTURING (3M) INACTIVE FILES hf FROM:
SUBJECT:
INACTIVATION OF REGISTRATIONS BASED ON AUGUST 6, 1991, LETTER.
A number of the background files for the registration certificates requested (by 3M letter dated August 6,1991) to be made inactive contain limited information on the products. A search of 3M registration, archive, and-
)
license files, and information in NUDOCS was performed to obtain additional information. Also, 3M was contacted to obtain any additional information that may have been in their files.
3M provided limited additional information concerning these products and indicated that the information provided represented all additional information in their files. Additional information obtained from these sources has been added to the applicable registration I
files.
At the present time, the information contained in the background registration files represents all available information for these products.
In addition, a number of these products were originally reviewed and approved by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).
The reviews performed for these products to make the certificates inactive were based on the information available, the previous reviews and approvals, and the historical use of the products (i.e., reports of failures or design problems, or the lack thereof).
In several instances, insufficient information was available to perform an adequate safety review.
In these instances, the certificates have been reissued based solely on the
-original AEC review and approval, and no additional safety review was i
performed.
