Attn: Charles E. MacDonald, Chief 7

Dear Mr. MacDonald,

Re: Type B Certificate No. 9160. Model Numbers 20V and 40V When Amersham Corporation acquired Gulf Nuclear, these containers 20V ard 40V were not assimilated into the product range supported by Amersham. Amersham has never. manufactured these containers, and does not intend to do so, and is not presently supporting the products.

The present Certificate No. 9160 expires on October 31, 1989 and on behalf of existing users, we would appreciate it, if you would consider renewal of the certificate.

We do understand and accept that it is reasonable and proper for a consolidated submission to be requested for a device that is still being manufactured. However, on behalf of the very significant number of present users of these containers, we would be very gratefL1 if you would consider renewal of the certificate for a period of time in line with the proposed 5-year grace period and proposed revision of 10 CFR Part 34.

As stated above Amersham Corporation is not presently supporting the containers and we do not

'i intend to apply for, or design a retrofit to bring the containers to the standards proposed for 10 CFR Part 34. Thus it can be assumed that these containers will cease to be used at the end of the 5-year grace period proposed in 10 CFR Part 34.

Our request for renewal of Certificate No. 9160 is made on behalf of the current existing owners of 20V and 40V equipment, in order to avoid the very significant cost impact upon them, if they were unable to use the 20V and 40V as Type B containers after October 31, 1989.

I enclose a check for $150.00, the fee for renewal of the certificate.

If for any reason the renewal certificate cannot be issued by October 31, 1989, I request an extension of the certificate for 6 months to allow for further discussion.
