' SAFETY EVALUATION REPORT, AMENDMENT APPLICATION DATED APRIL 27, 1989, RE CHANGES TO ACTION LEVELS-

Background

The existing license has established the removable and external radiation (beta and2 gamma) contamination action levels for protective clothing at 2,200 dpm/100cm and 0.5 mR/hr respectively. By letter dated April 27,~1989, the licenseerequestedauthorizationtoincreasetheprotgetiveclothingaction level:for removable contamination to 22,000 dpm/100cm andtogstablishaction

. levels (betaland gamma radiation) for shoes at 5,000 dpm/100cm for removable.

Discussion The' requested action levels for removable surface contamination closely follow-the recommended action levels in Regulatory Guide 8.21.- The requested action levels for external radiation on shoes is also consistent with that for-L protective clothing. Therefore, the staff has determined that the request.is acceptable.

Conclusion / Recommendation Based on the above discussion, the staff concludes the amendment can be issued L without undue risk to the workers, public, or environment. - Approval of the

-application is recommended.

The Region II Principal Inspector has no objection to this proposed action.
