Dear Mr. Randle:

We have received your letters dated May 11 and May 15,1998, regarding your request for obtaining information on the subject of nuclear fuel versus fossil fuel and associated cost analysis.

The NRC Inspection Manuals and various Technical Specifications contain an enormous amount of documents which are numerous volumes of 3-to 4-inch binders. These documents address specific technical issues related to many aspects of nuclear operations and they are written for the nuclear professionals. Therefore, they might be beyond the scope of your research interest.

However, I have enclosed the following literatures which you may find useful for your purpose.

The Regulation and Use of Radioisotopes in Today's World NRC: Regulator of Nuclear Safety Transporting Spent Fuel USNRC Information Digest

' Nuclear Power for Electrical Generation' from Reactor Concepts Manual Radioactive Waste: Production, Storage, Disposal e

Pages 16 through 28 of USNRC Information Dioest and excerpts from ' Nuclear Power for Electrical Generation' contain specific information regt.rding nuclear and fossil fuels as well as cost analysis between coal-fired and nuclear plant production expenses.

If you would still like to review copies of the NRC Inspection Manuals and the various Technical Specifications, they are available in all of the NRC local Public Document Rooms. The nearest one to you is located in the Appling County Public Library,301 City Hall Drive, Baxley, Georgia.

Since many public libraries have free Intemet access for their library card holders, you may also wt.nt to check our web site, www.nrc. gov, for various subjects on nuclear power. The web site also contains the complete set of NRC Inspection Manuals and Standard Technical Specifications.

Thank you very much for your inquiry. I hope you will find the enclosed information helpful.

Should you have any additional questions, please call toll free at 1-800-368-5642 and ask for my extension,415-1315, or the Office of Public Affairs,415-8200.
