Subject:

Byron Units-1 and 2 Response to Request For Additional Information Seismic Qualification of Deep. Wells NRC Docket Nos. 50-454 and 50-4M Dear-Mr.'Olshant During the May 12,' 1989, meeting between Commonwealth Edison and the NRC,. additional'information was requested on the Byron Station deep well seismic

. qualification.. Attachment A contains the requested detailed calculation on the.

threaded coupling connection of the pipe to the well head fitting. This connection-Lwas judged to be the weakest link in the anchorage of the discharge piping that st.pports the pump. i At the meeting, a question arose concerning the operability surveillance testing of theideep well pumps. There are two surveillance that would be required to demonstrate the operability of the deep well pumps. The first surveillance is a-monthly surveillance that requires the pumps to be run. During this surveillance, the current reading for the running pumps will be obtained. These amp readings will be forwarded to the Technical Staff for trending. This information will be able to-show deterioration of pump performance over time. .The second surveillance

'!s on an 18 month frequency. This surveillance has in the past been performed every 6 months and is performed te show that the required 550 gpm flow rate for each pump are obtained. Additionally, the pump amp readings will again be recorded and trended. These surveillance will be used to predict pump degradation.

Commonwealth Edison samples the well water to determine the quality of the station drinking water every year. The analyses performed on the drinking water would-detect substantial ground water leakage into the well. Additionally,

. Commonwealth Edisonswill physically examine the welded connection of the piping to the well head every 2 years to ensure early detection of deterioration of this connection. The Illinois State Water Survey has examined the deep well, however, the last examination was conducted in 1986.

The required surveillance, the physical examination, a54 water analyses. will be-used to prove that the deep well pumps are operable. Additionally, the trending of'.the pump amps'will allow early detection of any pump degradation. Conunonwealth Edison believes that these actions adequately determine deep well operability. Please direct any further questions on this subject to this office. Very truly your , hYW / R. A. Chrzano ski
