. .. o ROSLYN The Roslyn Savings Bank 1400 Old Northern Boulevard, Roslyn, N.Y.11576 Tel: (516) 621-6000 Floyd N. York Chairman of the Board and President May 25, 1989 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, D.C. 20555 Gentlemen:

I am highly concerned about the proposed dismantling of the Long Island Lighting Company nuclear generating plant at Shoreham.

I am distressed that so many of our elected officials are making a political football out of a very much needed source of electrical energy for the economic welfare of Long Island and its surrounding areas.

I am concerned that failure to utilize nuclear generating plants will only hasten the pollution of the atmosphere and make us captives, in an ever-increasing way, to the OPEC countries.

We have a plant (Shoreham) ready to operate , we have a forecasted need for the energy which it can generate, we have great opposition to the construction of new generating plants "in my backyard" by nearly every community. It appears that "we want our cake and we want to eat it too??" It's enough to make us sick -

- - sick of delay - - - sick of fantasized dangers of nuclear generators - - - and eventually economically devastated if Shoreham is abandoned.

I urge your Commissioners to do everything possible to Torce Shoreham to open. Thank you, S i nc e r e l y ,
