I am pleased to announce that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is planning to sponsor a training symposium for its staff und licensees on the topic:
" Firearms and Explosives Recognition and Detection," to be conducted
,NovsmbiF28-30;)1989lat the Hyatt Regency Bethesda, in Bethesda, Maryland.
1Its' puridse'is"to^ provide heightened recognition and awareness of state-of-the-art firearms and explosives technologies, methods of detection,

and events (both foreign and domestic) involving firearms and explosives.
See enclosed proposed agenda. The symposium will be conducted by a cross-section i
of industry and government experts and will be unclassified. Attendance will be limited to approximately 400 due to space limitations; however, we presently plan to have proceedings and, possibly, videotapes of the symposium available for purchase by attendees. At this time, we anticipate the training registra-
' tion _ fee will be in the vicinity of $150.00 per attendee.

As Symposium Chairman, I would like to note that the reaction received thus far in response to the symposium has been very positive and interest has been high. Detailed inforitation, in the form of a brochure and including registra-tion information, will be mailed to you later this year. We request that any questions you may have be reserved until after you have reviewed this detailed information. In the meantime, I hope that you, your safeguards training officer, and other interested members of your staff directly involved in contraband detection will plan to participate in this trafning.
