The NRC Integrated Inspection Report 50-309/97-09, dated March 26,1998 Gentlemen:

This letter is being sent to provide clarification of the amount of contaminated soil discovered on the plant site during Site Characterization and subsequently remediated.

During the Community Advisory Panel (CAP) meeting on 15 January 1998 Maine Yankee reported that, during the site characterization radiological scanning, an area on Bailey Point had elevated levels of radioactivity. We reported tht this small area of elevated radioactivity was approximately the ' size of a coffee can'.

In Reference (b) the NRC reported, on page 13, that Maine Yankee remedicted "...

approximately one cubic meter ofsoil" at this area. This information was provided to the NRC by Mairie Yankee. A more accurate estimation of the amount of soil remediated was an area of one square meter by 6 inches deep, ca. 0.2 cubic meters.

At the 7 April 1998 CAP meeting, a CAP member identified the apparent discrepancy between the size of the area remediated as reported in Reference (b) compared to Maine Yankee's description of ' coffee can' size area.

To clarify, although the arca of the soil containing all the elevated levels of radioactivity was roughly equilavent to that of a coffee can, Maine Yankee chose to remediate a much larger I

area, the volume of which was an area of one square meter by 6 inches deep, or about 0.2 cubic meters.
