DOCKET HOS. 50-445 AND 50-446
- AUXILIARY FEEDWATER PUMP MOTOR FAN BOLTS SDAR: CP-89-010.(FINAL REPORT)
Gentlemen:
On May '22, 1989. TU Electric notified the NRC via report logged TXX-89286 of a deficiency involving the bolts used to secure the auxiliary feedwater pump.
-motor fans to the rotor.
Specifically, carbon steel bolts were substituted in place of the originally supplied silicon / bronze bolts.
After 'arther evaluation, it has been determined that this condition is not reportable under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e).
The carbon steel bolts were marked with the standard Grade 5 marking, and testing confirmed them to be Grade 5 as marked.
Westinghouse has. indicated that there would have been no safety concern if Grade 5 carbon steel bolts were used.
Further, Westinghouse stated that there-is no time limit on using the carbon steel bolts, but that they should be replaced with silicon bronze bolts to reduce the potential for electrical arcing. Although arcing and burned paint were identified on the subject motors, correspondence with Westinghouse has determined that the condition that caused the burned paint and arcing would not have affected the safe operation of the motor.
