. Gentlemen:

Generic Letter 89-08

" Erosion / Corrosion-Induced Pipe. Wall Thinning" requested-information requiring the implementation of a long-term erosion / corrosion monitoring program to assure the structural ' integrity. of high energy carbon steel piping systems.

Duquesne Light Company (DLC) implemented an Engineering Standard,

" Erosion / Corrosion Program, for Beaver Valley Power Station Units 1 i

2" in

November, 1987.

This program meets the intent'of the NUMARC program and was intended as a long-term erosion / corrosion monitoring program for Beaver Valley Power Stations (BVPS).

However, since the engineering standard primarily provides engineering guidelines and control, and does not provide site-wide administrative controls, a Nuclear Group Directive has been drafted i

and is in the. review and approval phase.

The Nuclear Group Directive will ensure the implementation of a

long-term erosion / corrosion monitoring program and will administratively control the participation of all responsible personnel 'at the site.

A scheduled implementation date for the Nuclear Group Directive is November 15, 1989.

The engineering standard will also be revised in order to clarify the intent of the erosion / corrosion monitoring program.

A scheduled completion date for the engineering standard revision is September 30, 1989.
