't 1 Technical Specification 3.3.

.(BG&E), dated May 3,1988, Technical Specification Amendments for Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Units -I and 2 Gentlemen:

In Reference (a), we requested a change to the Unit 1 Technical Specification which

. governs the Incore Detector System. Because of the poor quality of 'the existing Tenhnical Specification page (attached), we provided you a retyped page prior to the issuance of Reference (b). Recently, we discovered several typing errors in this Technical Specification which changed its intent. We request that a corrected page (attached) be issued to correct this problem.

The first error is found in 3.3.3.2.b which now addresses the re-calibration of incore

' detectors..It is clear from a comparison with the previous Technical Specification that the correct wording should be excore detecton. Additionally, it is ' physically

. impossible to calibrate the incore detectors using the equipment listed in 3.3.3.2.b.

The Safety Evaluation. contained in Reference (b) correctly addresses the re-calibration

- of the excore detector. system. We have continued to re-calibrate the excore detector system using at least the minimum equipment required to be operable by 3.3.3.2.b.

The next ' error 'is found in Technical Specification 3.3.3.2.c.l.

The specification currently. addresses. 75% of ' all incore detector agments, it should - address' incore detector ~ locations. Both References (a) and (b)' correctly address incore ' detector

. locations in the text. If the. wording is not corrected, it could result in a condition

'less conservative-than was intended. Given the definitions of an operable detector segment and an operable detector location, it would be possible to render 50% of the -

detector locations' inoperable while maintaining. 75% of the_- detector segments operable.

Therefore, the. wording of the ; Technical Specification should be corrected so it will of ' the specification established in the Safety Evaluation.

meet the intent Should you have any 'further questions regarding this matter, we will be pleased ;to"

' discuss them ' with you.-

Very truly yours,

/
