SUBJECT:

SLUMARY OF A MEETING WITH INFO REPRESENTATIVES On May 9,1989, representatives of the radiation protection staff of the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) met with NRC headquarters and regional radiation protection tranagement staff members at the NRC Technical Training Center in Chattanooga to discuss topics of mutual interest ccncerning radiation protection at nuclear power reactors.

I was the senior NRC headquar-ters staff representative at the meeting and Robert Masse was the senior INP0 representative. A complete list of attendees is enclosed. This meeting was open to the public.

The topics discussed were as follows:

INP0's primary radiation (1) occupational radiation exposure controls u,d (2) protection concerns:

1.

radiation source reduction.

2.

INF0's reevaluation of the nine power reactor performance areas used as performance indicators.

3.

INP0's finding that contributing causes of occupational radiation expo-sures above regulatory limits in 1988 were the same as the contributing causes to previous overexposure; e.g., f ailures to follow procedures, poor hazards evaluations, etc.

The status of the INPO ALARA Center, an information clearinghouse, f

Plans for an INPD-sponsored workshop for industry on the topic of radio g.gf 5.
