SUBJECT:
NRC RADIATION PROTECTION AND CHEMISTRY INSPECTION REPORTS
50-254/98010(DRS); 50-265/98010(DRS) AND NOTICE OF VIOLATION
Dear Mr. Kingsley:
On April 17,1998, the NRC compieted an inspection of the radiation protection and chemistry
programs at your Quad Cities Nuclear Plant. The results of this inspection were discussed on
that date with Mr. Pearce and other members of your staff. The enclosed report presents the
results of that inspection.
The purpose of this inspection was to review the liquid and gaseous effluent programs, the
annual effluent report, control room engineered safety feature filtration system, and continuous
air and ars radiation monitors. The inspection also included a review of the circumstances
surrounding an individual who alarmed an electronic dosimeter while performing work activities
in the Unit 1 Drywell. In addition, several open items from previous inspections were reviewed
and closed.
Based on the results of this ;nspection, no cited violations of NRC requirements were identified.
The NRC has determined that the liquid and gaseous effluent programs were effectively
implemented. The engineered safety feature filtration system was in good material condition
and tests were performed at the required frequencies. Radiation Protection's response to en
individual who had alarmed his electronic dosimeter was good. The continuous air monitor
. program and the' area radiation monitor programs were effectively implemented. However,
while no instrument operability problems were noted, additional attention to the area radiation
monitor (ARM) trending and component evaluation process,' and the coordination between
radiation protection and other departments is warranted. No response to this letter is required,
