SEALED SOURCE TYPE:

Gamma Source DESCRIPTION:

)

There are two different source capsules, one for activity less than 500 mci and one for activity from 500 mci to 1000 mci.

In both cases, the source is doubly encapsulated in 304 stainless steel.

Both the inner and outer capsules are closed by a plug and by TIG welding.

The outer capsule is identical for both source capsules and has a minimum wall thickness of 0.025".

However, the minimum inner capsule wall thickness is 0.025" for the capsule with lower activity and 0.022" for the capsule with higher activity.

The Cesium-137 in the capsule is in the form of inert ceramic microspheres with a size distribution within the range of 30-200 microns.

The source is a cylinder, 0.280" in diameter by 0.520" long.

DIAGRAM:

Engineering drawings (DWG. NOS. 12-1921-2743-4 & 12-1921-0841-8) of the sources are shown in attachments 1 & 2.

LABELING:

The sealed sources are engraved with their serial number, isotope, and activity.

CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:

i The sealed source is for use in gauging devices and is installed in the gauging device by the device manufacturer.

PROTOTYPE TESTING:

The sealed source 3M Model 4P6M is identical to 3M Model 4P6E except for total length.

The Model 4P6E is longer by 0.230".

The Model 4P6E was prototype tested and given an ANSI N542 classification of 77C66545.

Since the only difference is the Model 4P6M is shorter than the Model 4P6E, it will perform the same when subjected to the same prototype testing.

Therefore, by engineering evaluation, the Model 4P6M attains a classification of 77C66545.

Gamma Source EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

Radiation dose rates were calculated for a 1.0 curie Model 4P6M.

l The dose rates are based on a NIST traceable standard and are as follows:

170,568 mr/hr 0 5 cm 4,738 mr/hr 0 30 cm 421 mr/hr 9 100 cm OUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL:

The quality program used to ensure the sealed sources are fabricated to NRC approved design is based on Mil-Q-9858-A guidelines.

The program has been previously accepted for licensing purposes by NRC.

LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

The device shall only be distributed to specific licensees of NRC or an Agreement States.

Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal:

To be determined by the licensing authority.

In view that these sources exhibit high dose rates, the sources should be handled only by experienced licensed personnel using adequate remote handling equipment and procedures.

The sealed sources shall be leak tested at intervals not to exceed 6 months using techniques capable of detecting 0.005 microcurie of removable contamination.

This registration sheet and the information contained within the references shall not be changed without the written consent of the NRC.

SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

Inactive Source Registrations k,

Gentlemen:

In accordance with a July 25, 1991 telephone conversation between Mr. Melvin R.

Peters, 3M, and Mr. John W.

Lubinski, NRC, enclosed is a listing of registered 3M sources which should be terminated.

The manufacturing of these sources either has been, or will have been, permanently discontinued by September 30, 1991.

It is our understanding that upon termination:

1.

The registrations will become part of NRC's inactive file, but present users of the sources may continue to use them.

2.

3M can accept the sources for disposal and leak testing, but cannot refurbish or repair them.

3.

3M, on a best effort basis, wi21 provide the NRC with a listing of the total number of sources sold and the date of the last sale.

4.

The annual maintenance fee for the registrations will be waived.
