Material License Number SNM-563

Dear Dr. McKetty:

requesting your support for the renewal, for storage I am purposes'only, of material license number SNM-563 that allows the Nuclear Engineering' Program of the School of Engineering to possess no more than 80 grams of sealed plutonium-beryllium neutron sources.

It is our intention to return the four sources to Savannah River due to declining enrollment in the nuclear program.

A request to transfer the sources to Savannah River made in a letter of April 4, 1988 is enclosed for your information.

My request to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) through your office is to renew the license (SNM-563) for storage purposes only until I receive a response from Savannah River about details of transferring the materials to them.

Your support of this request and its transmittal to the NRC is highly appreciated.

S erely yours, h

Dear Mr. Richardson:

In a telephone conversation with Mr. Craig Richins on March 29, 1988, I was advised to send you this letter in regards to the disposition of plutonium encapsulated as plutonium-beryllium neutron sources in our possession at Howard University. The sources were acquired with permission from the AEC (see attached letter) and have been used for education and training purposes. The material in our possession is described as follows:

Source Material:

Plutonium-Beryllium Neutron Source Type:

Sealed Sources Three (3) I curie sources One (1) 2 curie source Manufacturer:

Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corporation, Apollo, Pennsylvania The sources are currently housed in a NH-3 Neutron Howitzer and is complete with remote handling tongs.

The purpose of my letter is to request your assistance in providing guidance for the disposition of the~ material. Due to declining enrollment in our Nuclear Engineering Program and other competing uses for space in our facilities, it has become necessary to dispose of the material in our possession.

Our obligation to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission requires that we obtain permission from the NRC on Form 314 (copy attached) for the disposition f i

material in our possession.

In your response to my request, please provide information necessary for the completion of Box #2 or 3 of the form.
