January 1998 The reactor opcrated continuously in January with the following exceptions: five shutdowns for scheduled maintenance and/or refueling; three unscheduled shutdowns.

On January 12, a rod not in contact with magnet rod run in occurred (twice) when control blade

'A' drive mechanism magnet separated from its " anvil" seating surface during routine blade shimming evolutions. After the first instance, the upper housing alignment was inspected and the magnet seating surface was cleaned. After the second instance, the lower blade housing aligrm.ent was adjusted and the reactor was returned to normal operation.

On January 31, a rod not in contact with magnet rod run in occurred when control blade 'A' drive mechanism was bumped during a routine sample handling evolution.

Major maintenance items for the month included: replacing the 'A' solenoid in the primary system nitrogen back; replacing the servo-potentiometer on the stack monitor iodine channel; adjusting the upper and lower guide tube housing on control blade 'A' drive mechanism; replacing control blade offset mechanism 'C'; replacing secondary pump P-3 inboard pump bearing.
