SUBJECT:

Overflow of Sewage Holding Tanks Limerick Generating Station Permit No. PA-0051926

Dear Mr. Bower:

On February 26, 1989, at approximately 12:00 midnight,  !

the sewage holding tanks high level alarm alerted shift personnel to an impending problem. The vendor, contracted to remove sewage, was called but by 12:30 a.m. the holding tanks were overflowing. An attempt was made to contain the spill but 2000 - 3600 gallons of sewage was discharged to Possum Hollow Creek through outfall 002. The contractor arrived, and started pumping at 2:15 a.m. which stopped the discharge.

Initial notification was given to Don Batipps of the Pennsylvania DER on February 26th at 2:20 a.m. A second call was made on Monday, February 27, 1989 at 1:15 p.m. to Marcy Stoltz to correct some erroneous information. A visual inspection was made of the spill area, the outfall and areas downstream to determine possible environmental impact. None was found and no solids were discharged.

Approximately 3:00 p.m. on February 27, 1989 the area was washed down with unchlorinated wel.1 water.

The incident was a result of unusually high flow due to the additional personnel required for the refueling outage.

Since the tank overflowed soon after the end of second shift, shower facilities were concluded to have contributed the majority of excess flow.

This incident has been discussed with the sewage hauler, who has agreed to remove an additional 6000 gallons between 12:00 midnight and 1:00 a.m. each day to prevent recurrence.

This additional load should provide sufficient tank capacity until normal hauling resumes at 5:00 a.m.  :

Sincerely yours, i

I M.
