The Honorable Lando W.
Zech Chairman i
Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.
20555
Dear Mr. Chairman:
We are writing to express our grave concern about the decision today by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to approve an operating license for the Shoreham nuclear power plant.
As: you know, we oppose _Shoreham because the geography of Long Island would make evacuation impossible in the event of a nuclear accident.
The only way to escape from Long Island during an
. emergency would be to drive west on one of the east-west highways.
Normally these roads are quite crowded.
If the entire population of Long Island were to use them at the same time, chaos and tragedy would surely result.
Given the fact that operating the plant would subject our constituents to the possibility of a nuclear disaster and a doubling of the cost of electricity, we steadfastly oppose
.Shoreham..
In its negotiations with the-State of New York, the Long Island Lighting Company has agreed not to put the Shoreham nuclear power plant into commercial operation.
Should Shoreham be activated as a result of today's vote by the NRC, the costs to Long Islanders of decommissioning the plant will be higher unnecessarily.
We respectfully ask that you immediately withdraw Shoreham's operating license.
Sincerely, Atc.V---
