- On February 27,1998, the NRC completed' an inspection at your LaSalle County Nuclear
Power Station. The enclosed report summarizes the results of this inspection. I i. The inspection was an examination of activities conducted undsr your license as they relate to L, radiation safety and to compliance with the Commission's rules and regulations and with the _ p& conditions of your license. The inspection consisted of a selective examination c,f procedures .
and representative records, observations, and interviews with personnel. _Specifically, the focus > L of the inspection was to review the implementation. of the chemistry and radiological L environmental monitoring programs, and selected radiation protection activities including the . l - radiological planning and controls for the ongoing fuel pool inventory reduction project. l ' l. Overall, the chemistry and radiological environmental monitoring programs were well implemented. ' In particular, reactor water quality improved during the latter portion of the last - operating cycle, due primarily to improved management of the condensate polishers. Also, the reactor water makeup system was well maintained and the system met plant needs for pure ! water. . . . . i I We observed that good radiation protection coverage and effective radiological controls were. ! implemented during the underwater loading of irradiated components into a cask as part of the
- fuel giool inventory reduction project. However, because the as-low-as-reasonably achievable
(ALARA) plan developed for the project did not adequately incorporate lessons leamed from ! previous industry experience, the plan did not satisfy management expectations. f -
