SUBJECT:

Overflow of Sewage Line, Limerick Generating Station, NPDES Permit No. PA-0051926

Dear Mr. Bower:

On April 4, 1989, at approximately 11:00 a.m.,

a sewage line from the Personnel Processing Center backed up.

Sewage overflowed to a nearby storm drain.

The discharge entered. Possum Hollow Creek at outfall-012 and ended at aboutil2:45 p.m.

A visual inspection was made at outfall 012 and downstream of the outfall to determine impact to the environment.

There was no visible evidence of a sewage discharge.

The initial notification was made to Mr. Dave Arnold of the Department of Environmental Resources, Norristown Office at 1:45 i

p.m. on April 4, 1989.

Mr. Arnold was informed of our intent to wash down the affected area, including the storm drain piping, with unchlorinated well water.

A second telephone call was made to Mr. Bob Bower of the DER on April 6, 1989.

A waiver of the 5 day written notification was received at that time.

The Personnel Processing Center inputs to the sanitary waste system were isolated as soon as the problem was evident.

Site personnel responded to the incident by removing sewage accumulated above the blockage and clearing the blocked line.

Non-chlorinated well water was used to flush the storm drain lines through to Possum Hollow.

Upon clearing the blockage in the sewage line, the system was returned to normal operation.

The maximum volume discharged was estimated at 2000 gallons based on UPC/ BOCA standards for the number,of fixtures located in the building and a 20 minute surge time.

The actual volume discharged was probably much less.

This was an isolated. incident, not a result of neglect'or personnel ~ error.

Should~ indications of a recurrence arise; a i

vendor.will be called in to inspect and clean the lines.

Sincerely, C
