Environmental Qualification of Bunker-Ramo (Amphenol) Electrical Penetration Modules Gentlemen:
I In response to your letter of January 31, 1989 (Log Number 2821), Toledo Edison herein provides its position relative to the environmental qualification of the Bunker-Ramo (Amphenol) Electrical Penetration Modules (EPMs).
{
The Bunker-Ramo EPMs installed in nuclear safety-related instrumentation circuits at Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station are qualified in accordance with the " Guidelines for Evaluating Environmental Qualification of Class 1E Electrical Equipment in Operating Reactors," November 1979 (DOR Guidelines).
The information utilized in the environmental qualification package includes that presented in meetings with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Staff on August 4, 1988 and April 4, 1989, as enhanced by supplemental information, and provides reasonable assurance that the Bunker-Ramo EPMs are environmentally qualified.
Toledo Edison also plans to remove spare Bunker-Ramo EPMs at the next refueling outage (presently scheduled to begin February 1990) to conduct a test to provide information beyond the reasonable assurance now provided in the environmental qualification package that the Bunker-Ramo EPMs are environmentally qualified. This testing vill be conducted subsequent to the refueling outage.
Following this testing, the results will be incorporated in the environmental qualification package and vill be available for inspection.
If you have any questions concerning this matter, please contact Mr. R. V.
Schrauder, Nuclear Licensing Manager, at (419) 249-2366.
Very truly yours,
/
