Byron Station Units 1 and 2 Braidwood Station Units 1 and 2 Amendment.of Facility Operating Licenses.

Reference:

(a) October 4, 1989, letter from R. A. Chrzanowski-to T. E. Murley

Dear Dr. Murley,

Reference (a) provided the request for amendment to the Byron and Braidwood Stations Technical Specifications-to permit the use of continuous pressure testing of the containment airlock door seal gaskets-in lieu of manual testing.

The purpose.of this letter is to request the expeditious review of the proposed Technical Specification amendment.

The radiological concerns-with the manual performance of the current testing methodology have

~been outlined in an effort to communicate the potential.for improving ALARA performance with the implementation of the proposed Technical Specification amendment.

Current neutron dose rate in the vicinity of the Byron containment airlocks range from 2-5 mR, neutron exposure, per hour

-A typical' manual-test of the door gasket interspaces performed to meet the requirements of Technical Specification 3/4.6.1.3a, exposes the testing personnel to approximately 3 mR neutron.

The frequency that this surveillance is performed varies. A realistic estimate for Byron and Braidwood Stations is three tests per week.

The dose rate estimate for manua? testing of the airlock door gasket interspace is calculated as follows:

3 mR (N)

X 3 Tests X

4.33 Weeks 39 mR (N)

=

Test Week Month Month The exposure after implementation of the proposed Technical Specification Amendment will be limited to calibration of instrumentation required as a result of a high leakage rate alarm.
