Water Permits Branch Water Management Division 841 Chestnut Street Philadelphia, PA 19107 EPA Permit No. PA0025615 Reportable Occurrence
Dear Sir:
As required by EPA Permit No.
PA0025615, the following information is provided in regard to a
reportable occurrence at Beaver Valley Power Station:
Discharge
- 203, the Unit I Sewage Treatment Plant, exceeded the monthly average specification with respect to total suspended solids (40.47 mg/1) and pH (5.01).
The sludge storage tank air blowers had been removed from service for maintenance and the tank was isolated from the system.
When the blowers were returned to service, the tank was inadvertently aligned to pump back to the front of the plant causing a
pH and TSS upset.
A licensed sanitary waste hauler was contracted to pump out the storage tank and chlorine contact tank and the influent pH was adjusted to return the plant to normal operating specifications.
In the future, any waste holding tanks removed from service for maintenance will be pumped out and then sampled prior to placing back in service to prevent plant upsets.
Discharge
- 303, the Unit I
oil / water separator was out of specification with respect to the daily maximum of oil and grease (22.17 mg/1) on May 3, 1989.
The separator was removed from service, the baffle plates removed and individually cleaned, the housing walls scrubbed and steam cleaned and the separator reassembled and returned to service.
There were no further occurrence throughout the month.
In the future, the above activities will be scheduled as preventative maintenance on a routine basis to preclude any further violations.
