Subject:
B&W Presentation for Core Flood Nozzle ID Ultrasonic Inspection Gentlemen:
During the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station (DBNPS) sixth refueling outage currently scheduled for Spring 1990, the ASME Section XI required inspection
.of the core flood nozzle safe-end velds will be performed.
Section XI requires that an outside diameter (OD) surface and volumetric examination be conducted on the velds. In consideration of as-low-as-reasonably-achievable (ALARA) radiation exposures, Babcock and Vilcox (B&V) has proposed to Toledo Edison that a full volume ultrasonic inspection be performed as an e.lternative to the OD surface examination.
Babcock and Vilcox is planning to conduct a demonstration of the alternate examination utilizing a mock-up of the veld configuration. The ::ock-up vill
.contain artificially induced flaws and/or notches to demonstte.te that an inside diameter (ID) ultrasonic examination can produce equivalent results with similar sensitivity as the required surface examination. This demonstration is currently scheduled for August 8, 1989, at the B&V Lynchburg, Virginia facility. Toledo Edison requests that a NRC staff representative attend the demonstration to witness the test and results. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff representation at the demonstration has been previously discussed by Toledo Edison with Mr. T. V. Vambach, NRC/ Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Davis-Besse Senior Project Manager.
Following successful completion of this demonstration, Toledo Edison plans to submit a relief request pursuant tt,10CFR50.55a to facilitate use of the ID ultrasonic inspection.
Should further information be required, please contact Mr. E. W. Schrauder, Nuclear Licensing Manager, at (419) 249-2366.
