Dear Dr. House:
SUBJECT.
NONRADIOLOGICAL CONFIRMATORY MEASUREMENTS OPEN ITEM NOS.
(50-454/89013-01; 50-455/89015-01)
During the inspection of April 1989, an enion spike sample was provided for i
analysis of fluoride, chloride and sulfate.
The spike was prepared by diluting 50 mL of Unit One Reactor Coolant and 1 mL of the spike solution to one liter with high purity water. After thorough mixing, the solution was divided into two 500 mL poleythylene bottles. One bottle was used for analysis at the station and the other shipped to the Brookhaven National Laboratory for j
confirmatory measurement. At the same time, a separate 50 mL polyethylene
]
I bottle was filled with high purity water in order to check the possibility of contaminants leeching from the bottle.
l The spike solution analyzed in conjunction with the inspection in August 1988 resulted in disagreements.
In an effort to provide enough data to identify a possible cause of the mismatch, sample analysis was performed on different instruments, on different dates using different dilution ratios.
I Also, the contamination check was run three times, each two weeks apart. The holding time may prove critical and in the future, it may be necessary to 1
analyze the split as close as possible to the same date as Brookhaven performs the analysis.
