20555 Gentlemen:

DOCKET NOS. 50-256 AND 50-301 NUREG-0737, ITEM II.D.1 PERFORMANCE TESTING OF RELIEF AND SAFETY VALVES POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2

Reference:

NRC Letter to Wisconsin Electric TA Nos. 44608/44609) dated The Safety Evaluation Report transmitted by the referenced letter i

provided acceptance of WE actions.and responses to NUREG-0737, Item II.D.1 " contingent upon the licensee developing and adopting plant procedures for inspection and maintenance of the safety valves following each valve actuation involving loop seal or water discharge."

WE estimated completion of these procedures by June 30, 1989.

WE has taken the following actions to implement inspection / main-tenance requirements and procedures.

-1)

Routine Maintenance Procedure (RMP)-54 currently covers inspection and maintenance requirements for the pressurizer safety valves.

WE has initiated a revision to this procedure requiring inspection if actuation of the safety valves has occurred.. This inspection would be performed at the first opportunity following the actuation, and no later than the next normally scheduled refueling outage.

2)

We have initiated a revision to the Pressurizer Safety Valve Refueling Callup to review the last operating cycle to deter-mine whether or not a safety valve actuation has occurred.

If so, the callup procedure invokes RMP-54 for inspection of the safety valves und maintenance, if required.

3)

We have initiated a revision to our Alarm Response Book to i

initiate a Maintenance Work Request (MWR) to invoke RMP-54 as a response to a Lift Indicating Switch Assembly (LISA) alarm after verification of actual safety valve actuation.

'We believe these provisions meet the NRC requirements for ensuring proper inspection and maintenance, if required, of the pressurizer safety valves following valve actuation involving loop seal or water discharge.
