SUBJECT:
COMMISSION PAPER ON KEY ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH ADVANCED REACTORS In your memorandum of September 21, 1987 you informed the Commission of the preparation of two policy papers for Commission consideration of major issues involved in the review of advanced reactors.
Considering the status of the review efforts for the three advanced reactor concepts, the staff should complete the draft SER for the MHTGR as originally scheduled.
(The Commission recognizes that Commission decisions on the policy questions may require some revisions in the draf t SER on the MHTGR).
In parallel, the staff should complete the policy papers discussed in your September 21, 1987 memorandum and provide them to the Commission in early 1988.
These policy papers should be based on the review of the MHTGR and insights gained from the reviews completed to date on the other two concepts.
The effort towards completion of the SER's for the two LMR concepts should continue as originally scheduled and should reflect the Commission's decisions on the policy questions.
