DISPOSITION OF-TRITIUM-ILLUMINATED SHOTGUN SIGHTS In telephena conversations between Mr. M. ~ Elliott _ of this office and Mr. W.
Allmon_and Mr. W..Hutcheson of your staff on March 20, 1989, you agreed to-keep the tritium-illuminated gun sight assemblies received on January 5,1989,-
from Sage International, Limited, in storage until disposition was ' authorized by the NRC.
This action was confirmed in a letter sent to you on March 24-,
1989.
The NRC has completed a review of this matter and has concluded that the sight
. assemblies.can be decontaminated and distributed'for use.
Therefore, you are.
hereby authorized'to:
I 1.
Decontaminate the tritium-illuminated shotgun sight assemblies in your possession.or have the sight assemblies decontaminated by an organization licensed by the NRC or an Agreement State to preform such activities.
The removable contamination, level on a sight assembly to be released for use is to be less than 2000 disintegra-tions per minute per swipe.
2.
Resume routine distribution for thnse sight assemblies that meet the contamination level specified above, 3.
In addition to the actions specified abwe, we request that you hold for at least 90 days three sight usemblies that have been decontaminated to the level specified above to determine the extent of recontamination of the assemblies as a result of expected diffusion of tritium.
