MINUTES OF MEETING TO DISCUSS INFORMATION ON KAPTON INSULATION DEGRADATION IN HARSH ENVIRONMENTS On April 19, 1989, the staff met with personnel representing the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory- (NRL) and its consultants.
Lectromechanical Design Company requested the meeting to discuss recent information on degradation of Kapton electrical insulation in harsh environments. The meeting was held at NRC headquarters, One White Flint North, Rockville, Maryland. Enclosure 1 lists the participants.
As a basis for discussion, Mr. Frank Campbell, NRL, presented viewgraphs showing existing information on Kapton. The'viewgraphs are attached as Enclosure 2.
The basis for banning future use of Kapton-insulated wire in Naval aircraft was reviewed.
Recent research has reinforced NRL's understanding of the temperature and strain related hydrolytic degradation process. Strain is believed to play a dual role, first by contributing to breaking long chain Kapton molecules (which reduces the average bulk molecular weight and degrades mechanical properties), and second by causing cracking of the degraded insulation.
Laboratory data show consistent behavior of MIL-W-81381/11 wire at 100% humidity for various bend radii (strains) from 80 to 100*C. Little information is avail-able below 60'C, where Kapton wire is generally used in nuclear power plants, and the radiation resistance of Kapton in high humidity has not been studied.
These areas are outside the scope of liRL's funding..
