Limerick Generating Station Unit 2 Mechanical Equipment Qualification Program Gentiemen:

As requested by the Nuclear Regulatory Conmission staff, this letter provides confirmation that the Mechanical Equipment Qualification Program used for environmental qualification of active Safety-Related

. mechanical equipment at Limerick Generating Station (LGS) Unit 2 is consistent with'the program utilized for LGS Unit 1.

. hile the programs W

are consistent,.as described in the attached " Extension of Mechanical Qualification Program to Limerick Generating Station Unit 2," there are minor differences between the two units due to changes in equipment design and location.

These differences have been-doctmented and the equipment qualified to meet the commitments of the Lirnerick Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR).

Should you have any questions or require additional Information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

EXTENSION OF MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT QUALIFICATION FROGRAM To LIMERICK GENERATING STATION UNIT 2 l

1.0 INTRODUCTION

To demonstrate Mechanical Equipment Qualification (MEQ), design basis criteria are established in accordance with the appilcable codes, standards, Regulatory Guides, and other licensing bases and documentation is prepared and consolidated to substantiate the required qualification.

The Nuclear Regulatory ConmissIon (NRC) has reviewed and accepted the Limerick Generating Station (LGS) MEQ program for Unit 1.

Th's review and acceptance is established in the i

Limerick Safety Evaluat tui Report (SER-NUREG 0991) issued in August 1983 and through its supplements.

This surrmary description for the extension of the LGS Unit 1 MEQ Program to Unit 2 has been prepared to 1) show that the MEQ IIcensing cmmitments and program description as identified in the LGS Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR) Section 3.11 is appilcable to both units and that the implementation for Unit 2 is an extension of the Unit 1 l

program, 2) Identify minor differences in components or in items that affect qualification Latween Units 1 and 2 and doctment the qualification acceptability of those differences 3) establish that the conclustran reached in the SER for the acceptance of the LGS Unit 1 qualification program is also *,alid for the application of the LGS program to Unit 2.

i

2.0 EXTENSION PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The base criteria for the qualification of safety related equipnent and a description of qualification methods have been provided in the LGS FSAR for active mechanical equipnent. Documentation has been generated for the Unit 2 MEQ effort to either document the similarity and extension of Unit 1 qualification for like equipment or to provide additional qualification for new or different Unit 2 equipment. The Mechanical Equipnent Qualification Methodology is discussed below.

2.1 REVIEW METHODOLOGY The methodologies utilized for mechanical equipment have been adopted fran those used for environmental qualification of electrical equipnent.

The Unit 2 progran for environmental qualification of active safety related mechanical equipment is based on the program that was developed i

for Unit 1 as discussed in FSAR section 3.11 and the Mechanical Equipnent Qualification Report (MEQR). The program consists of evaluating essential non-metallic naterials of active safety-related mechanical equipment exposed to a harsh environment for both normal and post accident environmental conditions.

q i

l The Unit 2 equipment was ccxnpared with the Unit 1 counterpart using Quality Assitrance Doctsnents.(QADs), Material Requisition (MRs) and equipment vendor documentation for identification and comparison purposes. The Unit 1 MEQR was referenced for Unit 2 equipment found to be similar to that of Unit 1.

3.0 CONCLUSION

Based upon the fact that the Unit 2 MEQ program is an extension of the Unit 1 MEQ program, we feel that the conclusions reached for NRC acceptance of the Unit 1 MEQ program as stated in the LGS SER and its supplements can be extended to Unit 2.
