For the industry and the NRC to continue with preparations for the Performance Assessment Improvement Public Workshop. This public workshop will be held from September 28 to October 1, 1998, and will focus on developing improvements to the performance assessment process. The focus of the September 10 meeting will be to further discuss and develop proposals which will be used at the workshop as starting points to lead the j

workshop activities. These proposals would include a l
performance assessment model based on the "comerstones" of I
safe operation, and the development of the fundamentalissues which must be addressed during the workshop to develop the j
attributes of a new assessment process. The meeting will also include a review of the efforts taken to date by the Nuclear Energy Institutes (NEI) to validate proposed performance indicators i
against historical plant performance data.
