' ADDITIONAL INFORMATION CONCERNING INSERVICE TESTING OF PUMPS.

ed NRC Request: .

Provide a description of .the inservice testing of pumps at WolfJCreek Generating Station specifically addressing compliance with the requirements of 'ASME. Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section XI Paragraph IWP-3100 and Paragraph'IWP-3110. g

Inservice testing of pumps at' Wolf Creek! Generating Station (WCGS) is performed in accordance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section XI 1980 Edition through Winter 1981 Addenda unless specific relief. has been requested pursuant' to 10 CFR 50.55a. ASME Section XI Paragraph IUP-3100,

" Inservice Test Procedure", requires that the resistance of'a' system to be throttled until either the measured differential pressure or the measured-flow rate equals the corresponding reference .value. The measured test quantity is then ' compared ' with the reference value'or..the same quantity.

Deviations are compared with the allowable ranges of test quantities outlined in Table IWP-3100-2, " Allowable Ranges of' Test Quantities".

Paragraph IWB-3110 defines the reference values to be one or more fixed sets of values as measured or observed when equipment is known to be operating acceptably.

The reference values for inservice testing of pumps at WCGS were determined in conjunction with other required preoperational testing. A set of differential pressure and flow data points (minimum of three) were obtained for each pump and a pump reference curve which.provides a continuum of fixed I reference . values was developed. This pump reference curve is utilized for determining pump operability and for detecting- pump degradation in accordance with ASME Section XI.

The system line-up for an inservice pump test is generally the same for each test. During an inservice test, the reference differential pressure, corresponding to the measured flow rate, is obtained from the pump's reference curve. The allowable ranges for Acceptable, Alert and Actio are then determined by applying the limits in Table IWP-3100-2. The measured differential pressure is then compared to the allowable ranges to determine pump performance. If the measured differential pressure falls within the

-Alert or Action range, the appropriate corrective action is taken as specified by IWP-3230 of ASME Section' XI.
