SUBJECT:
Letter dated January 26,1998 i
Dear Mr. Barrett-This refers to the letter dated January 26,1998, from Mr. Edward Wilds, Radiation Safety Manager, forwarding an application dated January 23,1998, for amendment of the above-listed licenses. The application requested amendment for two items: changes in the reporting organization of the Radiation Safety Committee and Department of Environmental Health and Safety, and changes in membership of the Radiation Safety Committee. No amendment of your license is required for the changes described in the application. A copy of your letter and application will be retained in the docket file.
The NRC requests that licensees provide information regarding the reporting organization so that correspondence is appropriately directed to the licensee. However, no amendment is necessary when re-organizations occur that do not affect the level of management attention to licensed activities. The NRC also requests information regarding membership of the Radiation Safety Committee in order to confirm that there is appropriate representation of departments affected by licensed activities. However, no amendment is necessary when changes occur of i
specific committee members representing their departments, except if that member is the Chairperson of the Radiation Safety Committee named on the license.

I used 'H during a six-week period with a maximum on-hand activity of 50 pCi, "C during a six-month period with a maximum on-hand activity of 10 pCi, 85S during a 2-year period with a maximum on-hand activity of 500 pCi, and 32P for a total of four years with a maximum on-hand activity of 1 mci. Tritium and "C were used for enzyme activity assays (RNA polymerase and glycogen synthase), S was used for nucleotide sequence determinations, and 32P was used for Southern blotting, Northern blotting, and Si nuclease mapping procedures.
During my time as a postdoctoral fellow at Michigan State University I was in charge of weekly radiation surveys of the laboratory, and the ordering of radioactive material.
