~ s Storage of Nuclear Waste at Di&blo.Canyog/,yuclesr Power Plant i
Docket Nos. So-275-oLA and 50-323"0LAe l
Dear Sir,
I want to add my voice to tnose tnat will be neard at tne public i
hearing in Avila Beach on June 15.
Because of commitments at work, l
I will be unable to attend.
It appears to me taat we nave gotten into a very difficult situation because the long-term eafety issues were not addressed much earlier in t he process of planning, constructing, and taen beginning to oper-ate tne Diablo Canyon plant.
It was apparent from tne start tnat t ne plant would not only aroduce electricity but also radioactive waste.
RG&E made careful plans and predictions for the electricity.
1 but little attention was given by either PG&E or the NRC to the disposition of tne radioactive waste to be also Eenerated.
The matter is crucial.
The time for careful ceneideration is now and cannot be delayed.
Tne nealta and safety of not only present residents of the area are at risk, but tais is a risk tnat will NOT not just " go away" or " fade into a safe state" or "be taken care of in l
a few years 'oy nature and natural processes'.'.
he know tnat tais radioactive material will be dangerous to tas environment and to numans for a very long time.
It is extremely irresponsible to pro-I duce sometning we know to be toxic and lethal, to store it usinE a metnod we know to be unsafe, and to assume that tne Federal Government or future generations of scientists will somenow neutralize tne nazard we nave left.
-- e It is.ecoming increasingly clear tnat 1c ng-term storaEs of nuotaar waste it not an easy problem to solve.
,1y simply increasing t4e_ amount tnat can be kept at Diablo Canyon, we arp not nelpinE to solve. 3 # '

We are only magnifying it.
