We were unable to appear and provide testimony at i
the public hearing on this proposal. The anti groups took charget We are deply concerned that the present spent fuel j
pools will hold about 5 years of storage for Diablo Canyon. I am sure that other nuclear plants are in the same position.
i It seems to us the Federal Government has been derelict in their responsibility in not providing i
a repository for speny fuel. President Ford had ordered in 1976 that a permanent vaste repository l
be built by 1985. President Reagan signed a bill in l
1983 pushing the date back to 1998. The Department of Energy announced that the earliest it can have a permanent waste repository ready is 2003.
According to the NRC 60 power plants will run out of room to store their highly radioactive waste by 1995.
Diablo Canyon has only 5 years of storage capacity l
in its present pools.
What is the answer to this problem? We in our CAE I
organization believe the answer is to provide more storage capability in the present pools by approving a re-racking to store more spent fuel.
We urge your approval of the plan proposed by PG&E l
to increase the storage capacity of the present pools.

Sincerely, i
