Dear Sirs:
This letter is to object to the expanded nuclear' fuel storage at Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant.
' 1 The spent fuel storage that was originally approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for used radioactive material at Diablo Canyon had certain designed-safe guards built in during the.1970's and early 1980's.
After much discussion, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission determined that nuclear waste could be.
safely stored for a period of five (5) years in an appropriately designed storage area.
The parameters for that storage area were based upon safety.
Now, Pacific Gas & Electric Company claims they.can safely store up to 5 times the amount of spent fuel in'the same storage area.
Safety was the primary concern and design ingredient of the original fuel. storage location at Diablo Canyon.
It is ludicrous to believe you can store 5 times as much fuel in an area that was
- l clearly not designed (or such an overload capacity.

( m s. c As a resident of the C14y [of San Luis Obispo I find it unacceptable that.the Nuclear Regulatory Commission would now approve safety designs and techniques which were. clearly refused in the mid 1970's.
This appears to be a hazard to all of the l
residents living in the San Luis Obispo area and I urge the rejection of Pacific Gas & E3ectric Company's expanded waste storage. program.
