SAFETY EVALUATION REPORT, AMEN'D MENT APPLICATION DATFD AUGUST 14, 1987, RE EFFECTIVE DATE OF LICENSE CONDITION 27

Background

Amendment No. 6 to Materials License No. SNM-368 required UNC to terminate the discharge of liquid waste containing uranium to the septic leach field by August 31, 1987. In the subject application, UNC requests extension of.the deadline to October 31, 1987, to complete another construction project.

Discussion UNC has been discharging liquid waste centaining uranium to the leach field i for many years. Because this practice is not authorized by the regulations, Amendment No. 6 required UNC to terminate this discharge by August 31, 1987.

Because of onsite construction, UNI proposes a 2. month extension of the deadline.

Conclusion / Recommendation The 2-month extension should not have a significant incremental impact on potential contamination of the leach field. Approval of the amendment application is recommended.

The Region I Principal Inspector has no objection to this action.
