\\nssv' SALEM CENERATING STATION MONTHLY OPEIU/.'.ING

SUMMARY

- t.mIT No. 2 JULY 1987 The Unit began the period in a power escalation following investigations surrounding high vibration associated with No. 6 c

turbine bearing and an unusual noise being emitted from the vicinity of the steam lines from No. 27 moisture seperator reheater (MSR).

Power was held at sixty two percent (62%) as monitoring and analysis of the problem continued.

The results of the analysis indicated that the source of the unusual noise was in No. 22 low pressure turbine e

exhaust hood.

The Unit was removed from service on July 3, 1987, for investigation.

It was discovered that both No. 21 and 22 low pressure i '-

turbine steam inlet transition piece disphragm gaskets had failed.

The gaskets were replaced and the Unit returned to full power on July 13, 1987.

The Unit experienced a series of minor load reductions throughout the remainder of the period due to speed oscillations occurring in No. 22 Steam Generator Feed Pump, electrical storm activity, loss of the New Freedom 500-4 transformer, and a lightning strike on the 5021 Dean's Dist.ribution Line.
