WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 k.....[
December 11, 1987 CHAIRMAN The Honorable Sam Gejdenson, Chairman Subcommittee on General Oversight and Investigations Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs United States House of Representatives Washington, D.C.
20515
Dear Mr. Chairman:
I am responding to your letter of November 24, 1987, concerning several issues related to your previous requests dated August 27 and October 9, 1987 related to sabotage and. terrorism at NRC licensed facilities.
With the exception of classified documents, NRC fully complied I
with your requests as we understand them.
Classified documents were identified but were not provided to members of your staff, who do not currently have the appropriate clearance.
We can provide classified documents directly to you, arrange a classified briefing to discuss the content of_the documents with you, or provide access to the classified documents to any staff member of the Committee who has the appropriate clearance.
It would require approximately three months and extensive agency resources to edit out classified material from the documents that we identified but did not provide.
For this reason, we would prefer to provide access to the classified l
documents or a briefing about them.
After such a review, it is likely that your request for redacted documents could be narrowed.
We would then be able to respond in a timely, more efficient manner.
To this end, we are prepared to expedite the security clearance process for any staff members that you designate.
l The substitution of the word " identify" for " provide" in Question 20 of your August 27 letter and similar' changes to-Question 5 of your October 9 letter were unintentional and did I
not affect the documents identified as responsive to those requests.
At this time, we have not identified any additional documents that would be subject to either request.
If we do so in the future, we will provide them promptly.
Sincerely, 8712300203 871211 PDR COMMS NilCC hV.
CORRESPONDENCE PDR Lando W. Zech r.
