Dear Mr. Chairman:
This responds to your request for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's views on H.R. 3499, the "Subseabed Nuclear Waste Disposal Research Act of 1987."
The Commission has no comments on this proposed _ legislation because we would have no role in subseabed research under the bill and have not been assigned this responsibility under other legislation.
H.R. 3499, if enacted, would have a negligible effect on the use of our resources.
The NRC would periodically review subseabed disposal research program' activities so that we are-aware of their implications-for geologic disposal.
We might i
l also be asked to provide comments on the research efforts,.as our experience with geologic disposal may be relevant to subseabed disposal.
There efforts would be undertaken,as part of our normal agency mission, and we do.not believe these reviews would require substantial resources.
