SUBJECT:

MATERIAL DEVIATION FOR CASTOR V/21 CASK BASKETS As documented in Reference 2, a review of the cask fabrication documentation performed by Virginia Power and General Nuclear Systems, Inc., QA personnel resulted in the initiation of a material deviation pertaining to the basket for cask serial number 009, manufactured by Butting (FRG).

Subsequently, GNS performed an in-depth review of all documentation of the fuel baskets manufactured at Butting and have found that another basket (for cask serial number 008) is also affected.

These two fuel baskets have been put on hold, segregated and tagged to prevent inadvertent use.

The Bundesanstalt fur Material-forschung und-prUfung (BAM) in FRG has been notified of this non-compliance.

The Deviation Report which was prepared to document this finding is currently being reviewed by BAM.

The report will be forwarded directly to you for your review and concurrence pendinc approval by BAM.

A Quality Assurance internal audit has been performed by the GNS management and corrective actions taken in order to prevent recurrence of this situation.
