SUBJECT:

HRC TMI-2 CLEANUP PROJECT DIRECTORATE WEEKLY STATUS

?4 REPORT FOR AUGUST 24 - 30, 1987 E;)

1.

STATUS REPORT FREQUENCY h

Beginning in September 1987 the NRC TMI-2 Cleanup Project Directorate l

keekly Status Report will be issued on a monthly basis.

Reports will be distributed during the last week of each month.

l 2.

DEFUELING Pick and place defueling of partial length fuel assemblies i

continued. Partial fuel assemblies F-14 L-10, L-12, L-13, M-10, H-11, M-12 and N-12 were loaded into defueling canisters. Thus far 93 fuel assemblies out of a total of 177 in the core have been

  • ~

loaded into canisters.

Approximately 140,000 lbs of fuel and debris out of a total of approximately 300,000 lbs in the core have now been loaded into canisters.

3.

ENVIRONMENTAL M0hlTORING US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sample analysis results show tant TMI site liquid effluents are in accordance with

{

regulatory limits, NRC requirements, and the City of Lancaster j

Agreement.

n;~r TMI water effluents from the station (Units 1 and 2) discharge are t

f ',

analyzed by EPA. Ganna spectrum analyses of the seven daily g'

composited samples for August 8 - 15, 1987 indicated no reactor j

~

related activity. Low levels of Iodine;131 were detected in the

)

intake and discharge water samples for August 10 - 12, 1987. A l

q4 medical use discharge through a sanitary system upstream is the most likely source.

EPA's ganna spectrum analysis of the NRC's TWI outdoor air sample l

V for August 21 - 28, 1987 shawed no reactor related radioactivity.

DECONTMitETION ACTIVITIES During July 1987, Phase III endpoints were reached in four auxiliary building cubicles:

the reactor cuolant pump seal water return cooler and filter aree; spent fuel pool water cooler room;J.fld the spent fuel pool water filter area.

Phase 111 endpoints vary f roa1 2.5 mR/hr through 25, 50, 500 to as n,uch as 1,000 mR/hr radiation dose rates and are generally based en future access frequency.

The dose rates in these areas range te 100 mR/hr.

In the fuel handling building, the neutralizer tank filter room was brought to Phase III and the radiation levels are generally less thou 180 mR/hr.

The first of an expected three containers of reactor building sludge Was solidified this week.

The six feet diameter by six feet tall liners are being preparea fcr burial at a disposal site.
