ENCLOSUR E (I)

REPLY TO NRCINSPECTION REPORT i

50-317/87-14; 50-318/87-16 l

I In Section 2.c of the subject inspection report, a concern regarding the Auxiliary i

Building drain system was expressed. We acknowledge and share your concern. The peri-odic backing up of Auxiliary Building drains has occurred despite past efforts to clean, modify, and ma ntdn this system. Presently, the following factors suspected of

{

contributing to the systere backing up are, j

j (1)

A reduction in drain piping capacity due to material accumulation, (2)

System check valves malfunctioning, and (3)

Pumping the Emergency Core CoeUng System (ECCS) pump room sump to the Miscellaneous Waste Receiver Tank (MWRT) via the Auxiliary Building drain system (the only path available by design).

We are presently evaluating the Auxiliary Building drain system. This evaluation includes both a review of the design of the system check valves, as well as a possible modification to separate the ECCS pump room sump flowpath to the MWRT from the temain-ing normal flowpaths to the MWRT. We are also considering the use of improved screens for floor drains to minimize system blockage. In the interim, the Auxiliary Building drain system will be cleaned and a frequency estab;ished for future cleaning. The preventive maintenance schedule for ckaning the MWRT duplex strainers will be reviewed to ensure a frequency consistent with planned work which could affect Auxiliary Building drains.

We will monitor the results of the above efforts, and will consider further system modifications if the results do not meet our expectations.
