Section 4.8.1.1.3 of reference (a) requires that all diesel generator failures, valid or non-valid, be reported to the NRC pursuant to Specification 6.9.2.

Attachment "A" provides an update of failures since the submittal of reference (b).

Attachment "B" provides an updated summary of diesel generator 1DG0lKB's performance since the successful completion of pre-operational testing.

- CWS/87-157 ATTACHMENT A On 4-28-87 at 1043, the IB diesel generator tripped on " Reverse Power" during performance of a temporary, auxiliary power procedure. The procedure required the cross connection of the Unit 1 'B' train ESF Bus (142). to the Unit 2 'B' train ESF bus (242).

- The Unit 2 System Auxiliary Transformer (SAT) then supplied both the Unit 1 and the Unit 2 ESF

'B' train buses. The IB diesel generator was used to transfer ESF Bus 142 power supply from the Unit 1 SAT to the Unit 2 SAT. After synck nir-' ion, the 1B diesel generator load rose to 3500 kw.

The operator made a slight adjustment to the governor control and the load dropped below 0 kw.

This caused a

" Reverse Power" trip. The IB diesel generator was restarted and used to restore Bus,142 and Bus 242 to the normal operating lineup.

The " Reverse Power" trip was attributed to an intermittent malfunction of the isochronous mode relay. This equipment problem was identified on March 16, 1987 as reported in our April 28, 1987 failure report. A modification was initiated in March,1987 but had not yet been installed at the time of this event. The faulty relay does not affect any of the emergency functions of the diesel generator and therefore, it was capable of starting and supplying emergency power. The modification was completed on'5-6-87.

The invalid failure was the 15th since completion of pre-operational testing.

The corrective actions taken to address the existing failures on the 1B diesel generator have been successful in preventing recurrence of identical failures.

Due to the relative diversity of the failures, no identifiable trends have been noted.

The 1B diesel generator has been on a monthly start schedule since 4-10-87.

The IB diesel generator's performance has shown improvement, twenty successful valid starts have been achieved with one valid failure.

Therefore, per Technical Specification Table 4.8-1, the IB diesel generator will be started every 31 days to verify capability.

The diesel generators are inspected during every operability run. Any problems that develop are corrected in a timely manner.

Braidwood Station believes that this approach is appropriate to maintain proper diesel generator availability and operability.

The 1A and 1B diesel generators have met all testing and operability requirements of position C.2 of Regulatory Guide 1.108.
