B&W REASSESSMENT, 2:00 P.M.,

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5,

OFFICE (OPEN TO PUBLIC ATTENDANCE)

The Commission was briefed by the representatives of the B&W Owners Group (BWOG) and the staff on the status of reassessing the safety of B&W designed nuclear power plants.

The following BWOG representatives participated in the briefing:

Skillman, Chairman Owners Group Safety & Performance Improvement Program Neil A.

Rutherford, Chairman Owners Group Steering Committee The BWOG committed to investigate the practice of some licensees of conducting planned trips from high power in order to remove deposit buildup on the secondary side of the steam generators and to assess the safety implications of those practices.

The BWOG also committed to be the focal point of keeping the i

Commission and staff informed on the status of each plant's i

response to the BWOG recommendations and to assure the Commis-sion that all of the owners have implemented the applicable recommendations to the satisfaction of the BWOG and in conformance to BAW-1919.

4-Chairman Zech made the following requests:

1.

Upon completion of review, the: stuff should verify that' present requirements and regulations for B&W reactors are appropriate.for the long term and lead to a level of safety at B&W plants that is comparable to other pressurized water reactors.

The staff should comment on the adequacy of B&W once-through steam generators, in regard to safety when compared to U-tube steam generators.

The staff should comment on the acceptability of the emergency feedwater initiation and control system for each B&W plant.

Details, such as non-automatic response to steam and feedwater line' breaks should be addressed.

The~ Owners Group should show aggressive pursuit of its recommendations (BAW-1919).

5.

The owners Group chould not drop its emphasis on balance of plant systems.

The staff committed to issue its SER on BAW-1919 in October, 1987, with a supplement on the ICS/NNI at a later date.
