20555 Dear Mr. Zech We are writing this letter in regard to the February 10, 1987 Petition for Immediate Action filed'hy the linion of Concerned Scientists et. al., to request a public adjudicatory hearing in Facrarento to determine whether modifications made to nuclear power reactors designed by Pabcock and Wilcox are sufficient to warrant their continued operation.
Because of the seriousness of the December 26, 1985 accident at Pancho Feco (violation of pressurized thermal shock linits, damage to plant equipment, and inability to manually control niant systems) we believe it is clearly in the public interest that the 5'uclear Regulatory Cornission hold a hearine in the acramento area.
Ttr e scoce of the hearine should address design flaws in each of the five srecific systems which are identified in the Union of Concerned.ccientists' petition, as well as the issue of the tec-hnical ability of the N'uclear Regulatory Commission to evaluate 1
and' assess the level of danger inherent in the continued operation of 'abcock and Wilcox designed plants.
