, nit ' P 71W MEMORANDUM FOR:

John L. Crooks, Chief Data Management Section Trends and Patterns Analysis' Branch, AEOD FROM:

G. L. Plumlee III, Senior Plant Systems Engineer Trends and Patterns Analysis Branch, AE0D

SUBJECT:

NPPM USER INFORMATION OBTAINED FROM RESEARCH (RES)

I have discussed with Jit Vora (RES) our desire to obtain RES's opinion /

experience in using the Nuclear Plant Reliability Data System (NPRDS).

Based on the fact that the NRC Plant Aging Research (NPAR) program is the most significant RES user of the NPRDS, Mr. Vora agreed to provide the enclosed information for our use.

The enclosures provide some specific limitations and insights as to how the NPRDS, with some additional data reporting improvements, has the potential to provide useful data for the NPAR program. As you know, I have spent a considerable amount of effort / time, as a member of a NPRDS Users Group Subcommittee, in promoting revisions to the NPRDS scope in order to meet the NRC's data needs (especially as they relate to the NPAR program).

Therefore, I propose that we closely monitor the industry's and INP0's efforts in revising the NPRDS scope, not only to meet NRC needs, but the industry's needs as well.

I intend on providing the enclosures, for information in support of the subcommittee's efforts, to the chairman of the NPRDS Users Group Subcommittee (Mike Rodin) who was directed to determine current NPRDS user data needs, and provide proposed revisions to the NPRDS scope in order to meet these needs.

G. L. Plumlee III Senior Plant Systems Engineer Trends and Patterns Analysis Branch, AEOD
