-CONTAINMENT INITIATIVE STATUS

1. - VERMONT YANKEE Mark I Containment On Sootember 5, 1986, the licensee submitted a report on Containment Safety Study to the NRC and the State of Vermont.

On October 24, 1986, NRC staff provided comments and questions on the Licensee's Study.

On October 31, 1986, contractor for the State of Vermont (P.R.

Davis) provided comments on the Licensee's Study.

On May 1, 1987, the NRC requested additional information from the licensee on the status of its work in the containment initiative.

On June 25, 1987, the licensee provided NRC a status report.

Review Status: the staff is reviewing the June 25th submittal and is in the process of preparing additional questions.

The staff feels that the Vermont Yankee Study needs i

substantial work before the staff's review can be completed. )

l I 2.- PILGRIM Mark I Containment On July 25, 1986, Boston Edison Company announced that it will I voluntarily consider modifications to enhance Pilgrim Station containment capabilities.

I On April 30, 1987, the NRC requested that the licensee provide d* tails of the modifications and the procedural changes. ,

.g Safety Enhancement Program.

l On July 22, 1987, the licensee briefed the staff on its Safety )

i Enhancement Modifications.

On August'4, 1987 the licensee briefed the staff on its E0P development program.

. - Review Status:

-Initial staff reviews complete

-PM is drafting a letter to the licensee  ;

-Torus vent operation may be a problem. Staff is not prepared to endorse installation of the torus vent modification at this time.

3. Shoreham Mark II Containment i The staff has completed the review of the corium ring in conjunction with its review of the request for authorization to operate at 25%

power.

On July 21, 1987, the licensee briefed the staff on the filtered vent concept.

During the briefing, the staff asked a number of questions on the licensee's venting concept. The licensee plans to provide answers to these staff questions.

Review Status: Additional staff reviews will be scheduled after receiot of the licensee's submittal.
